Review: The Lyrebird by Cecelia Ahern

“Life is in two parts: who you were before you met her, and who you are after.”

If you can imagine an enchanting, almost magical world existing in our very own, then this is the book that has made reading come to life.

Overall, The Lyrebird did not succumb to my expectations and by no means is that a criticism. After reading the synopsis I gathered that the book would have a mystical take on reality and in return not making it very relatable, but I was wrong.

Although it gave off an initial fantasy vibe, I was pleased that wizards, witches, or even angels, are non-existent in this book. Without giving the plot away too much, the main character ‘Laura’ is just simply different. The exotic and shy woman coined as the ‘Lyrebird’ for her talents of mimicking sounds, similar to the Australian bird, and has been living in the wilderness for ten years since the deaths of her family.

After being discovered by a film crew she finds her ‘Freedom.’ Surrounded by nature and often alone, means travelling to a city full of loud noises and most of all, people, of course means freedom for Laura can’t be construed to live up to what it fully represents.c

Laura’s journey relates to what it feels like to want to fit in, when really life is about being yourself and not fitting it to societies perception of how they want you to be.

Essentially, the book covers romance and discovery, but most of all the perceptions of how people choose to see Laura.

Cecelia Ahern has wrote a beautiful book with an original story line that cannot be discredited in my opinion.
